YOU ARE HERE:  home home biz ideas executive recruiter

Home Based Business Idea

E X E C U T I  V E   R E C R U I T E R:

Business Description:
You have your finger on the pulse of industry trends and future staffing requirements.  You are a master at networking and gaining contacts.  You know how to be where the action is, and take full advantage of it.  Your job is to find the candidates that are seeking to make a career change and then match them with the firms that are looking for qualified employees.  You should have the experience and industry knowledge that identifies you as a seasoned professional.  You will need to qualify a potential candidate and make the right choice.  You need to develop strong relationships with a few chosen companies and then maintain those relationships by providing quality pre-screened clients on a consistent basis.  Develop a deep understanding of the companies needs so that you do not waste the time of either the potential employee or employer.  You will need to be flexible and to meet your business associates when it best fits their schedule.  Many potential job candidates will need to work with you after normal working hours.

Your Unique Skills:
Discretion and professionalism are strong attributes of a successful executive recruiter.  If you are already an expert in a highly specialized industry and have the insider knowledge to uncover rising stars in that industry then all the better.  For example, the technology industry has acronyms and special jargon that only someone familiar with the environment could understand what the client is looking for.  To seek a highly qualified candidate (without only resorting to the typical resume fluff) would require that you have detailed insider knowledge of the industry.

You will be the coach for the interviewee.  By understanding the needs of a potential employer you can then coach your employee  so that they will have a greater opportunity to present the right information at the interview.

You should be an expert at working a crowd of business professionals.  Often times new prospects and clients can be obtained through chance meetings or casual introductions.  You need to communicate effectively and "sell" your ideas or suggestions.  Many recruiters have worked in personnel or career counseling in some capacity.

Remember: The potential employer is your client, not the job-seeker.

Tools of the Trade
Computer, modem, printer and fax. Database management software will help you keep track of resumes you have on file and quickly match candidates to employers (Webster Base, a shareware program designed for employment agencies, is an excellent and easy-to-use choice). As always, stationery and business cards are a must.

Show Me the Money
This is an interesting question because it really depends on you.  How much do you want to make?  Statistics show that each individual changes careers an average of five times.  The market for repositioning someone in a professional career is huge.  One problem today is that anyone can call themselves a professional recruiter.  There are no barriers to entry.  So that means that competition for quality clients is also huge.  If you are good at what you do though you can always shine above the rest.

Your pay comes from the companies searching for employees/candidates.  You get paid when the candidate you presented is hired.  Fees can range from 20% to 30% of the employee's first-year salary. A successful recruiter can earn over $100,000 in a year.
